This year, taxpayers got many extensions in the deadline of income tax returns filing. Earlier, the date was extended to 15 September 2021 from 31 July 2021. But recently, the Central Board of Direct Taxation issued a notification declaring the deadline extension of ITR filing for the financial year 2020-21. Now everyone can file ITR till 31 December 2021. ITR filing dates for companies have been extended from 30 November 2021 to 15 February 2022. Moreover, other associated deadlines were also extended. But after the first extension, why the government extended the dates further? This question is fuming in the minds of the taxpayers. Let’s find the answer to this question.
Earlier this year, the extension was provided as a relief to all the taxpayers during the tough time due to the pandemic. Various extensions in the tax deadline were done on the ground of Covi-19 relief.
Being one of the leading tax consultants for income tax return filing in Delhi & other parts of India, we found that the major reason for these extensions is the series of difficulties that many taxpayers were facing due to technical glitches on the new income tax portal. Although the government has extended the ITR filing date in the past as well, the extension never went beyond 30 November (except during the pandemic).
In June, a new income tax portal was launched with several pre-filled ITR formed quick refunds, which make the tax filing process much convenient for the taxpayers. But as many taxpayers complained about the technical problems on social media, the government allowed the manual filing of remittance forms and extended the due dates for e-filing of forms.
According to an official release, the ITR filing rate increased to 3.2L per day in September & around 1.19 Cr. ITR (AY 2021-22) has been filed. So more and more taxpayers are using an online utility to file ITR even when the date has been extended.
